Riverview Park. Mississippi.

AS SOON AS he got home from the hospital, Rob sat on the patio at the back of the trailer and smoked while Yolanda took Penny for a walk around the park. He could see fishing boats on the river and hoped he could go out for an hour later. It would be hell getting in and out of the boat.

Yolanda had made him a sandwich and he had a beer in front of him and all in all, didn’t feel too bad.

I wonder if they arrested Darlene yet? She shot me because of Yolanda. Jealous red-headed bitch.

Out of breath, Yolanda came jogging back with Penny. “She’s a fast runner. Faster than me.”

“Thanks for taking her. It’s my job.”

“It would be your job if you could walk, but you can’t.”

Rob tipped up his beer and chugged the rest of it. He set the can on the table and looked Yolanda right in the eye. “I think you should get yourself a better boyfriend than me. I’m gonna drag you down, Yo. You’re young and healthy and I’m… such a goddam mess.”

“Yeah like you’re old? I’m twenty-five and you can’t be much older.”

“I’m twenty-eight, going on eighty,” said Rob. “Might not make it to my next birthday.”

“When is your birthday?” asked Yolanda.

“I forget,” said Rob. “Think about what I said about dumping me. I don’t want you to have a shit life.”

“No. I’m not doing that. You’re the person I love, and you’re only messed up because you’re shot. When that’s over with, you’ll be fine. Give yourself some time.”

“I’ve ruined one woman already,” said Rob. “I can’t even think about the hell I put Grace and my son through. I don’t want you to be number two.”

Yolanda smiled. “I’ll take my chances.”
